Great designers have the willingness to explore the infinite realms of creativity. They expand the boundaries of their imagination by seeking new ways of seeing lines, colors and patterns. By employing a design method, the designer’s perspective broadens by rearranging the elements of natural laws. In this way, they create designs that are original, inspired and deeply moving.

Elements of Shape

Understanding the nature of shapes is having an understanding of the elements that build them. The building components in creating shapes are points, lines and angles. Each component defines the nature of the shape and the style it represents.

Points,  Lines and Angles help you understand the elements of shape

POINT refers to an area that represents a point of origin or a change in direction. In a hair design it is an area on the head where you section the hair, or where the cutting lines change direction.

ANGLES are created when straight or curved lines joined together. They are the building blocks to making shape in the hair. When points, lines and angles all join together, they create shapes.

LINE is either straight and curved. Straight lines are more severe and dramatic to visual perception, while curved lines are softer, less dramatic. Straight or curved lines can work separately or together for endless design possibilities.

SHAPE is defined in a hair cut by the silhouette, or the outer edge of the design. Interior shapes of a hair cut can refer to the shape of the graduation or layering.

Angle-Grid

Central to the Cutting Club’s method is the Angle-Grid, an illusionary tool which allows the artist to see and understand how to map the movement of the hair cut.
